Line keys on multiline telephones can be programmed as message waiting indicators which are associated with the mailboxes of other stations. The indicator flashes when a message is waiting in the associated mailbox. This allows users to look at a multiline telephone and recognize which mailboxes have messages. When the flashing key is pressed, it calls the associated mailbox using the prime line. If the prime line is busy, the user can select a free line. If the voice mail system is centralized, the call may occur across an MSDN network or cluster.
Only available on multiline telephones.
Not supported on Symbol Wireless phones nor on Generic SIP sets. (Message Waiting indications are only provided for the prime line on these devices.)
If there is no message in the associated mailbox (no flashing light), then pressing the associated key is ignored.
All voice mail indications for a given directory number (DN) must be on the directory number's local telephone system.
If the Message Waiting - Deactivate on Offhook COS option is enabled for a particular prime directory number, it affects all message waiting indicators for this prime DN. It does not affect the indicators of other directory numbers.
If message waiting indicators for non-prime extensions are programmed on a multiline set, message waiting is applied to the indicator and the message is stored against the non-prime extension itself (the messages are not applied to the "first" device on which the non-prime extension is configured).
If message waiting indicators for mailbox extensions are programmed on a multiline set, voice mail operation for that mailbox is enabled. Calls to the mailbox extension follow DND rerouting, which can be configured to direct the call to voice mail. Message waiting is applied to the indicator and the message is stored against the mailbox extension.
The 6905 IP Phone does not have LED support. To retrieve a message on the 6905 IP Phone, you must press the programmable key that is configured to call a mailbox.
For HCI Reroute hunt group type, the message waiting indicator (MWI) does not flash for hunt groups or members of the hunt group. However, standard dtmf to pbx message waiting activation and feature access code from the Embedded Voice Mail system will activate the MWI for the member of the hunt group.
